According to Phys.org, it’s reported that “NASA’s Parker Solar Probe will launch to travel closer to the Sun, deeper into the solar atmosphere, than any mission before it.” Temperature testing from the design team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has determined that the probe can withstand temperatures up to 3,000°F. It was built using carbon composite foam and is situated between two carbon plates.
The team also “grew sapphire crystal tubes to suspend the wiring, and made the wires from niobium” in order to help reduce the chance of melting. The probe will also use deionized water in order to help cool it. “While plenty of chemical coolants exist, the range of temperatures the spacecraft will be exposed to varies between 50 F (10 C) and 257 F (125 C).” Water is one of the few liquids capable of withstanding these ranges when exposed to thermal testing.
Before it completes it’s mission, the spacecraft will have collected data by orbiting the sun approximately 24 times.
