Validating Lunar Readiness: Thermal Vacuum Testing at ispace

Satellite Thermal Test Chamber

Industry Related News:

ispace recently reached a major development milestone for its Series 3 lunar lander by completing an extensive round of thermal vacuum testing, a critical step in preparing hardware for the harsh realities of space. This testing was performed on the lander’s Structural Thermal Model (STM), which is designed to represent how the real spacecraft will respond to extreme environments. By placing the lander inside a large thermal vacuum chamber, engineers were able to replicate the near-zero pressure of space while exposing the structure to dramatic temperature swings similar to those encountered during a lunar mission.

The thermal testing pushed the lander through temperatures ranging from roughly –140°C to +130°C, simulating conditions from deep lunar shadow to direct solar exposure. These extremes are essential for validating how heat moves through the lander’s structure, how insulation and coatings perform, and whether materials maintain their integrity without warping, cracking, or degrading. Thermal vacuum testing also helps engineers confirm that internal heat from electronics and other systems can be properly managed, ensuring components neither overheat nor freeze once the spacecraft is in operation.

Passing this phase of thermal testing is more than a technical checkbox—it provides confidence that the Series 3 lander’s thermal design can survive real mission conditions. With this data in hand, ispace can refine its flight model, reduce risk, and move closer to Mission 4 readiness. In the context of lunar exploration, where temperature extremes are often mission-ending challenges, successful thermal vacuum testing represents a crucial foundation for long-term reliability and overall mission success.

ELI-1000 Remote Thermal Testing

ELI-1000

A Remote, Compact Testing Solution

This revolutionary system combines a thermal source and custom or standard chamber into one system. The interchangeable chamber feature of the ELI-1000 allows users to easily accommodate their varying industry needs. The patented technology in the ELI-1000 allows for a steady state operation with a heating/cooling system that can be operated and controlled independently of each other.

Khoury Box - Microwave Thermal Testing

Khoury Box

RF, Microwave Thermal testing

Controlling temperature with precision at the device case is a major benefit of the Khoury Box thermal test fixture. The DUT is isolated in a localized enclosure (at temperature) with the thermal air circulated around the device under test or DUT. Tester interface utilizes impedance-matched connections to ensure true and accurate test signals between the tester, the thermal test fixture, and the DUT.
